Procedure to Canadian Citizenship.
If you are planning to move to Canada, be sure to investigate Canadian government information on the requirements and application process, and the basics of living and working in Canada. Then go ahead and download the appropriate application kit.
If you've lived in Canada as a permanent resident for three of the last four years, maybe it's time to apply for Canadian citizenship. Every year about 170,000 permanent residents become Canadian citizens. Here's how to apply for Canadian citizenship and be one of them.

Applying for Canadian Citizenship.
If you want to become a Canadian citizen, you must
- Determine if you are eligible to become a citizen.
- Apply for citizenship.
- Verify the status of your application and prepare for the citizenship test.
Use the citizenship study guide entitled Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship to prepare for your test
- Take the citizenship test, if you are between the ages of 18 and 54.
- Attend a citizenship ceremony, if you are 14 or older.

After applying.
Once they start processing your case, they will send you a notice confirming they have received your application for Canadian citizenship.
They will also send you a copy of the study guide Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Study the guide carefully. You will find the information in it for the citizenship test.
When you come for the citizenship test, remember to bring the following documents with you:
- the original documents you submitted with your application (personal identification, immigration documents, etc. For a complete list, see Becoming a citizen – How to apply and
- any passport or travel documents relevant to the four years before your application.
You can check the status of your application online. You can also check the status of your application by contacting the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre.

Total processing time 19 months Status available online from receipt of your application to citizenship ceremony
Note: If it has been longer than the time shown above since you applied and you need more information, please contact the CIC Call Centre. However, please note that Call Centre agents cannot speed up the process of your application nor make decisions on your case. Call Centre services are only available for people inside Canada.
