What is British Citizenship ?
British citizenship is one of the six different forms of British nationality. Some of these were defined in the British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on 1 January 1983. Applying for British Citizenship.
There are many ways you can qualify to apply for British citizenship. If you are over 18 and have been living in the UK for the last five years (or three years if you are married to or a civil partner of a British citizen) you may be able to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen.
Once you know you are eligible to apply for British citizenship, there are three ways you can apply:
- Applying through the Nationality Checking Service (NCS).
- Applying through an agent or representative. If you apply through an agent or representative, make sure they are registered with the Office of the Immigration Service Commissioner (OISC)

You can also make an individual application. The application form and guide have guidance on what documents need to be submitted. Your application may be delayed if you do not provide the necessary documentation.
Once you know you are eligible and decide how to apply, you can download the form and guide from U.K Boarder Agency. The forms you need to fill out will depend on your specific circumstances and the type of citizenship you are applying for.
The UK Border Agency has additional information that may be helpful in the form of leaflets on the types of applications for British Citizenship.
